Permanently installed data monitoring equipment has been used to monitor reservoir pressures on oil and gas wells for more than 25 years and early on it was widely accepted that significant benefits existed in having gauges installed on the tubing string at or near the sandface with continuous data readout to surface.

The ability to use downhole data to pro-actively detect problems gives operating Oil Company Management Teams the tools needed to maximize well potential and minimize operating costs.

In addition, the technology and design to convey monitoring systems to (or near) the sandface and provide reliable and reasonably priced solutions has been improving at a continuous pace.  With the advent of more shock and temperature resistant downhole components combined with improved instrument cable designs--reliability and run life has been markedly improved.  Currently, success rates in excess of 90% are not unexpected provided that expert installation services are employed combined with state of the industry electronics.
